Plurilingualism is a widespread phenomenon in the world and it can be found especially in multicultural regions. Although in everyday life, the term seems to be common and simple, the specialists find it difficult to define the concept, mainly because it occurs in different regions, situations and for various reasons. Plurilingualism can be classified according to several criteria, such as the level of the languages or the period of language acquisition.
There are two opposing poles when it comes to defining the term, on the one hand there are scholars who claim that a person is plurilingual only if they know the languages on a mother-tongue level. On the other hand, others describes plurilingualism as the ability of a speaker to utter simple, but intelligible sentences in several languages. In this study, plurilingualism is defined as a social-linguistic phenomenon, which means that a person is able to speak several languages fluently and can understand the cultural codes.
Plurilingualism does not only appear in ordinary conversations, it can also be found in literature. In the 20th century, plurilingualism became one of the most widely researched fields, mainly on the level of linguistics and psychology. The aim of this study is to present the plurilingual elements found in Herta Müller’s literary work in order to illustrate how the languages influence each other in literature. The paper can be seen as a chronological research of Müller’s work from the point of view of plurilingualism and is divided into three genres: essays and novellas, novels and collage.
The main source of inspiration of the Nobel laureate is her life under the oppressive Ceausescu regime in Romania, which explains the fact that several elements from different languages can be found in her texts.
