“As the modern community of states in which we live, Europe has become more than a political construct. Europe also represents common values and a diversity of cultures. Europe means striving for common goals and common success, freedom, liberty and friendship. Even beyond that, a united Europe serves as an example for other regions and confederations. It is therefore all the more important that, in these trying times, we truly live in solidarity instead of creating divisions amongst us. Taking responsibility for us and our future generations, we stand united for freedom, liberty and friendship.” For the second year, the Kiel University invites everyone to enjoy the events and presentations of Europe Week. From May 8 to May 14, the university will promote unity and support diversity and core values of the European society. The more than 50 projects presented during this week shall bring Europe to life. For the first time on this occasion, projects will be presented in a commemorative publication. The focus will be on our junior academics, our students and PhD candidates.

The range of their projects is as diverse as the themed week:

• External characterisation and division of Europe in the antiquities: Hippokrate’s and Sokrate’s theoretical approaches to climate
• The Friesian commerce: An analytic tool to the emergence of the Hanseatic trading network?
• The significance of the Scandinavian royal houses for the population during the Second World War (1940–1945)
• Dove c’è pasta, c’è casa? – Barilla e le idee dell’Italia
• Supporting students’ competence in choosing careers in Sweden: A reconstructive case study of the field of Studie- och Yrkesvägledning
• Catholic & conservative? Liberalising homosexuality in the 20th century in Spain, Portugal & Italy
• Possibilities for translating regional stereotypes exemplified on the Spanish film Ocho apellidos vascos
• Rest in peace! An investigation of restlessness in images of death in Occidental history
