About this book deutschenglish
Glottodidactics. Past – present – future is a collection that constitutes the fifth part of The state and the outlook for language education in light of European standards series (ed. by Beata Mikolajczyk and Renata Nadobnik). The authors of the texts included refer to various issues relating to language learning and teaching from a time perspective.
A historical approach can be found in the presentation of the role that dictionaries have played in the development of language skills, as well as an outline of the cultural contents of a 1980s Polish textbook of German as a foreign language.
A number of other texts are grounded in linguistic and cultural heritage, but the topics they discuss have rich relevance in the present, state-of-the-art language teaching. One of these includes the results of an analysis of the morphosemantic motivation for compounding; another emphasizes the importance of religious vocabulary when teaching Arabic. In relation to German language teaching, the importance of including its diatopic varieties is underscored. Another text presents the ways in which musical expression is used as a means of sensitizing learners to a language and its culture. Another theme that is raised within this approach is the use of fairy tales and storytelling in general when teaching English to very young learners.
The remaining papers, while still referring to present glottodidactic processes, are concerned with problems that will need solving in the future. On the basis of empirical research, another paper presents how the needs of English language learners are defined with regard to their speaking skills. The question of specialist language teaching is brought up in a paper offering guidance in terms of adequate linguistic preparation for studying engineering in Germany. The final paper discusses the role of foreign language teachers in present day contexts.
This collection addresses the notion of foreign language teaching and learning as a continuous whole, whose potential can offer inspiration for further insights into glottodidactics.
