About this book deutschenglish

The analysis of impacts of sports training on athletes is not only the core field of training science, but also a topic that is highly contemporary. For planning training optimally, in terms of performance enhancement as well as for avoiding dangerous overload, it is highly interesting to monitor the relation between training load and recovery status. This dissertation deals with this exciting topic. National top level swimmers were accompanied over a long period of time and daily training stress and loads as well as the resulting changes in recovery-stress state were documented and evaluated. Besides objective training parameters, all training sessions were assessed by the athletes using the session RPE to record subjective load. The measurement of recovery-stress state was performed daily by filling out the Acute Recovery and Stress Scale (ARSS), a multidimensional measure of recovery according to the current state of research that considers not only the physical, but also the emotional and psychological recovery or stress. The results provided by this extensive study are unique: The response of the stress-recovery state to training loads is highly individual. Both, type of response and time delay of response can vary enormously between swimmers, and for the same swimmer at various times: While some athletes respond with a dropping recovery state to intensive training, as expected, others felt recovered and more balanced due to the higher training load. These reactions occurred in some cases immediately after training and in other cases delayed for several days. Consequently, this study highlights the need and demand for individual coaching of top athletes including appropriate monitoring of training and recovery data.
