Factors of success for intercultural collaboration in Germany, Singapore and the USA. An empirical analysis using the example of an international company with its headquarter in Germany

As globalization intensifies, many German companies have recognized possibilities for corporate growth and have established subsidiaries abroad. Now, employees with different cultural backgrounds experience foreignness as they work with their colleagues from abroad. Many misunderstandings and misinterpretations prevent successful collaboration. This shows that intercultural interaction is a highly complex process. To achieve the desired success, companies have to analyze how this process works within the company in order to develop context-specific solutions.

Therefore it is of major importance for corporate management to identify factors that influence intercultural collaboration positively. As this difficulty is relevant for business and research this work of research focuses on employees’ collaboration in Germany, Singapore and the USA. Singapore evolved to an important business location in the Asian area for German companies during the last decades. Yet, international management research addresses Singaporean culture only insufficiently. This work contributes in closing this gap in current research.

To obtain a comprehensive understanding of the process of intercultural collaboration, four superordinated factors of influence as well as their interdependencies are explored empirically: national culture, corporate culture, employees’ intercultural competence and intercultural communication.

Even if national and corporate culture differ significantly, successful collaboration is possible as the results show. Because independent from cultural differences many factors of influence hold potential for success. These are introduced in detail.
