"Career guidance as a science - four decades of academic education for careers advisers in Mannheim" was developed following the international conference on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the qualification programme for career counsellors by the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit (BA)) on 22 November 2012 in Mannheim.
The publication authentically discusses the ideas of the founders and the implementation of the academic qualification of career counsellors at the various academic institutions of the BA over four decades. In 1972, the first basic course of studies for career guidance in Germany was established in Mannheim.
The edited book includes presentations and elaborated lecture manuscripts as well as other scientific contributions by authors who have been feeling connected to the BA university (HdBA) and its predecessors for a long time. In addition to that, elaborated verbal contributions provide an insight into the panel discussion which took place during the conference. In particular, the contributions address the organisation and curriculum development as well as the thematic fields of guidance research which are suitable to support the academic qualification of career counsellors. Necessarily, this involves the discussion about the professionalization of career counsellors and the kind of scientific foundation.
The aim of the editors is not to give a historically objective and comprehensive representation of subjects, but to provide an image gained from personal experiences and contributions. Thus, the 17 contributions from home and abroad reflect the impressions by contemporary witnesses from science and practice. At the same time, the contributions show significant bridges to the present-day understanding of the current courses of studies at the HdBA.
