On the basis of historical written and archaeological records, this book illustrates the Eastern Ionian city Phocaea/Foça and its colonial cities Massalia/Marseille (Provence), Emporion/Empúries (Catalonia), Alalia/Aléria (Corsica) and Elea/Velia (Campania).

Following a short preface, the first chapter gives a general overview of the Greek colonizations. The second chapter deals with the historical significance of the city of Phocaea, in particularly with its extended sea trade in the 7th and 6th Century BC.

The third chapter deals with the Western colonies of Phocaea. After the Ionian uprising at the beginning of the 5th Century BC, these cities took over the major part of the mother city’s trade relations - in particular the tin trade from England via France, and the grain trade from Spain.

By drawing upon historical records, the chapter highlights the relevant aspects of each colonial city, including its constitution, coinage, cults, social structure, and the relationships with its indigenous population. The chapter ends with an examination of the philosophy of Parmenides of Elea, and the impact his philosophy had on future times.

Finally, the author compares the colonial cities of Phocaea, both to identify similarities and differences.
