The subject of this book is family metaphors, which were spoken in the German Bundestag, and how they are applied to political-ideological interests. The cognitive metaphor theory provides the methodical basis for this investigation.

On the basis of data material from the 16th legislative period, it is shown how both political poles of the coalition parties – the Union parties: (CDU) – Christian Democratic Union of Germany and (CSU) – Christian Social Union of Bavaria, (SPD) The Social Democratic Party of Germany on the one hand and the opposition parties, (FDP) – The Free Democratic Party, (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) – Alliance 90/The Greens, (Die Linke) – The Left on the other hand use family metaphors in different ways: For coalition parties, these metaphors serve as a rule for stocktaking of the achievement, describe family-political perspectives and signal the readiness to include other political forces in the solution of existing problems. Against this fatherly-caring use of metaphor by the coalition, the opposition parties apply them for the purpose of criticizing and defaming the coalition. The opposition lays the main focus above all on the emphasis of disregard of the family; nevertheless it offers hardly ist own quick-witted, metaphorically occupied concepts.

The author tries to use family metaphor to reconstruct party-specific as well as non-partisan family concepts against the background of socio-culturally conditioned political thought patterns, to disclose the manipulative-persuasive character of these metaphoric concepts and to question the underlying party-political strategies.
