The professional development and training of teachers is not always efficient. How can professional training be designed to transform theoretical knowledge into competent practice? Over a period of one year, three schools participated in an intervention strategy that is based on the “psychological action theory”. The strategy consisted of a multi-phased professional training series including team work and social support with observations and reflections, as well as a close-knit mentorship. Both the design of the method of intervention and the research project itself are based on the idea of human beings as epistemic subjects, whereupon reflexivity, rationality, emotionality, capacity to act, autonomy, and the capacity of verbalization and communication is awarded to humans. The research project subjective theories on one hand, and the proposals to action research on the other hand, provide the epistemological background. The research design centers on a field experiment, which requires ecologically valid conditions, containing pre- and post inverviews and implicit process analysis. The paper follows two basic research questions: What professional trainings were implemented in the classrooms of the participating teachers? And how often? How did the participants experience and use the methods at their schools?The study process and results are triangulated and numerous useful recommendations are offered for best teaching and school development.
