About this book deutschenglish
Johann Christoph Fesel (1737–1805), the last court painter of the prince-archbishops of Würzburg, was up to the present publication almost unknown. This book tries to show all the important stages of Fesel’s apprenticeship – in the environment of the courts of Würzburg, Vienna and the Accademia di San Luca in Rome – and his life and work as court painter, teacher and art theorist up to the secularisation of the Bishopric of Würzburg. As student and coeval with the most famous painters of his generation – Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Anton Raphael Mengs and Pompeo Batoni – Fesel is an interesting personage of the late 18th century, where art is a subject to constant change: from Baroque and Rococo to Academic Classicism. Together with the catalogue raisonné this treatise gives a valuable insight into the life, art and duties of the last court painter, which reflect the artistic and political inconstancy of the late 18th century. Keywords
