Rezension

About this book deutschenglish

Although computers and the internet offer a variety of different uses for the younger generation, traditional media like print, radio and also television are put under pressure by a consistently growing choice of media offerings, TV is still number one for children. Even in this day and age, children’s television is relevant, as long as its content is convincing and offers what children want. What exactly that is and to what extent the requirements are going from a children’s point of view are researched. In this context, the term quality is omnipresent and is on and on again the centre of public discussions. However, quality cannot be objectified, due to different societal contexts. Various moments of the discussion of quality are reflected in different academic disciplines and contexts. Based on research of current literature on this field of interest, various discourses can be identified and exposed. On the one hand, these are important in the current discussion about quality in children’s television. On the other hand, an essential shortcoming is dominating the present dispute around this issue: in all on--going discourses around quality in children’s television, children are subject of the discussions, but the point of view of children themselves however, is rarely taken into consideration in arguments around the issue of quality. In this present paper, the children’s point of view is put in the centre in order to get to know more about requirements children have for programmes that are specifically produced for children. This means taking children with their viewing habits, fields of interests and their everyday lives seriously and including them. In an all--new experimental field, namely children juries at various film and television festivals, the criteria of quality defined by children of the juries are analysed. The qualitative analysis of arguments coming from children being part of a jury allows different and new perspectives as such juries can contribute to a new public that enables children a more direct participation in media production. Hence, the discussion about quality in children’s television is based on quality requirements coming directly from children. Using already existing and well--established festival structures and children juries, it is a good possibility coming close to an evaluation of quality from a children’s point of view, as last but not least, children juries are crucial and choose awardees of their most favourite programmes. With statements coming from children assessing the viewed programmes it is possible to identify criteria that children consider to be important. These in turn can find their use in the development of programmes for children. Retrospectively, the communicative occupation with programmes makes an important contribution to the promotion of media expertise, connected with the promotion of communicative, cognitive and emotional expertise. From the children’s statements, relevant criteria are derived in order to feed them back into the current academic discourses surrounding the issue of quality in children’s television, into the production of programmes and into programming strategies.
