The present volume brings together selected contributions from the international EUROPHRAS conference Phraseology and Communication – Formulaic Language in Communication / Phraseologie und Kommunikation – Formelhafte Sprache in der Kommunikation, which took place in May 2025 at Aarhus University. Scholars from different countries explore the role of phraseological and formulaic structures in various domains of communication and cultural contexts.

The volume focuses on current research questions in phraseology and paremiology from interlingual, intercultural, and discourse-linguistic perspectives. The contributions demonstrate that phrasemes, proverbs, and collocations are not only fixed elements of the lexicon but also carriers of cultural meanings and important instruments of social communication. The studies collected in this volume are organized into four thematic sections.

The first section examines cultural as well as inter- and intralingual dimensions of phraseological units, for example through contrastive analyses of idioms or investigations into the development of formulaic structures in specialized languages. A second group of contributions is devoted to proverbs and phraseological quotations in discourse. Further studies address collocations in discourse and analyze their function in different social domains – from tourism and corporate communication to debates on energy policy. Finally, a fourth section highlights the role of formulaic language in different text types, such as ritualized forms of communication or the digital medical discourse.

Overall, the volume offers a multifaceted insight into current developments in phraseological research and highlights the considerable potential of formulaic language for the analysis of communication, culture, and discourse across different languages and contexts.
