Whether in school-based social work, youth welfare services, or early childhood education settings: antisemitism poses significant challenges for professionals in social work and social pedagogy.

The German Federal Government supports antisemitism‑critical educational efforts, which have developed into an independent pedagogical approach since the early 2000s. Nevertheless, antisemitic attitudes are on the rise and, since 7 October 2023, have reached a new peak in reported incidents. It has become evident that merely conveying knowledge about the Holocaust and the various manifestations of antisemitism is insufficient to curb its spread, particularly because antisemitism is embedded in broader societal structures. This professional volume therefore introduces a new approach to pedagogically addressing antisemitism by drawing on Michel Foucault’s discourse theory. Based on Critical Discourse Analysis, plenary speeches of the German Bundestag (from 2003 to 2020) on the topic of antisemitism are examined, making educational process theory applicable to social work, social pedagogy, and civic education.

The book offers:

• suggestions for the didactic and methodological further development of antisemitism‑critical educational work, and
• guidance for addressing communicative challenges within pedagogical settings.
