About this book
German SMEs with Chinese subsidiaries are at a strategic crossroads. They must either opt for greater diversification outside China or intensify localization within China. The resulting localization wave 2.0 is increasing the postulation for a new leadership model that goes beyond traditional hierarchical models and addresses challenges, particularly in times of geopolitical tensions, derisking strategies, and discussions about decoupling, to ensure effective cross-location collaboration.
Digital leadership enables organizations to combine strategic flexibility with operational resilience. It supports faster decision-making, cross-border transparency, and data-driven coordination between headquarters and local subsidiaries. By leveraging digital tools and platforms, leaders can bridge physical distance, manage risks proactively, and maintain competitiveness despite increasing regulatory and market uncertainty.
This book merges the ambidexterity of the digital leadership concept with the cultural particularities in China and practicable aspects of the digital transformation. Based on grounded theory and experiences of China-experts, it guides through the development of the ‘Digital Leadership Model China’ and its managerial assessment tool.

About Christoph Lautsch
Christoph Lautsch, born in 1979, holds a doctorate in economics with a focus on international management. He combines his academic expertise (University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management Munich, Swiss School of Management, Munich Business School) with many years of leadership experience in a globally operating German mid-sized company in the automotive and pharmaceutical sectors.
Over many years, he played a leading role in establishing the company’s business operations in Asia (Japan, Korea, China). In particular, assignments in the United States as a project manager as well as several years in Shanghai as Sales Director and Business Development Manager shaped his profound understanding of intercultural leadership and the development of international business structures. In this context, his focus lay on managing complex sales and organizational processes at the interface between the German headquarters and Chinese subsidiaries.
The present publication derives directly from this practical experience: in it, Christoph Lautsch, PhD (SSM), develops a pioneering approach to determining the level of digital maturity in cross-location leadership—making an important contribution to the analysis and design of modern global organizational processes in the age of digital transformation.
