About this book

An interdisciplinary study addressing the complex issue of the perpetuation of the cult of the Danubian Horsemen in the mythology of the Balkan Peninsula, with particular focus on the Romanian cultural space.

Bringing to the forefront a theory that has long surpassed the boundaries of a mere hypothesis—supported by numerous arguments drawn from ethnographic material (iconography, oral tradition based on carols, legends, fairy tales, folktales, etc.)—the study explores the continuation of the Thracian Hero myth in the Christian figure of Saint George. This endeavor illustrates a process of mythological transposition, a syncretic adaptation reflected in Balkan culture more broadly, and outlines a continuity between pre-Christian and Christian traditions, with a special emphasis on the Romanian space.

Furthermore, through an interdisciplinary approach, the proposed study offers a new perspective on the perpetuation of the cult of the Danubian Horsemen in Romanian folk culture. This is all the more relevant given the now well-established fact that representations of this cult were significantly more numerous in the former Roman province of Dacia than those of the Thracian Hero in the same region.

These new and bold perspectives and hypotheses may open new avenues for research into the religious and mythological imaginary of the post-Roman Balkan space. They could provide a significant contribution to understanding the dynamics of this process and the mechanisms of cultural and religious continuity in the region, while also—potentially—contributing to the redefinition of certain historical-religious paradigms.
