About this book
Agriculture and tourism are two critical sectors that shape the socio-economic landscape of rural areas. In recent years, the diversification of agricultural activities into tourism has become an increasingly important strategy for farm sustainability, economic resilience, and rural development. The monograph Decision Support Systems in the Agricultural and Tourism Industries provides a comprehensive and systematic analysis of how decision support systems (DSS) can facilitate strategic decision-making in the diversification of farm activities.
This work presents an innovative application of system dynamics modeling to assess various scenarios for the integration of tourism as a complementary activity in agriculture. By leveraging simulation models, the study explores how different economic, environmental, and policy-driven factors influence the long-term sustainability of diversified farms. The authors offer a unique methodological approach that combines qualitative insights from expert focus groups with quantitative simulation results, providing a holistic perspective on rural tourism development.
One of the monograph’s major contributions is its empirical focus on Slovenia, a country characterized by a highly diverse agricultural landscape and strong rural tourism potential. Through case studies and data-driven analysis, the book highlights key determinants of successful diversification, including investment in tourism infrastructure, regulatory challenges, and the role of government support programs. The findings provide valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, farmers and rural entrepreneurs seeking to expand their economic opportunities.
Moreover, this publication contributes to the broader academic discourse on rural development, bridging the gap between agricultural economics, tourism studies, and system dynamics. It challenges traditional views on farm-based tourism by demonstrating how data-driven decision-making tools can enhance business planning, risk management, and long-term strategic development.
With its interdisciplinary approach and practical implications, Decision Support Systems in the Agricultural and Tourism Industries serves as an essential reference for scholars, policymakers, and professionals interested in sustainable rural development, agritourism, and innovative decision-making frameworks.
