About this book

Regardless of one’s stance on migration, the fact that 400 million people are ready to immigrate to the European Union (which nearly equals the entire population of the EU) justifies the concerns surrounding migration challenges in Europe. However, it is essential that these concerns do not become irrational.

Unlike Western European countries, which largely mitigate their demographic challenges by attracting population from the European periphery, the latter has encountered globalization and migration currents without adequate preparation. The book illustrates that while migration itself is not inherently problematic, it poses significant challenges for societies experiencing demographic trends like those in Southeastern and parts of Eastern Europe.

In addition to the analysis, the book offers concrete proposals for improving migration, integration, and demographic revitalization policies in Europe. The key questions the book addresses include:

  • How does migration affect the essence of the nation-state?
  • How do the political left, centre and right view migration?
  • What are the negative consequences of the free movement of workers within the EU?
  • Do migrations know winners and losers?
  • Why is immigration justified as an inevitability and a "win-win" situation for everyone, even though the arguments show the opposite?
  • Is the import of "cheap" labour from third countries actually a concept of suppressing the price of labour in the EU?
  • What does the conflict between capital and demography consist of?
  • Has integration into the EU succeeded anywhere?
  • Is the thesis about "population replacement" paranoid or does it have elements that need attention?
  • Do large migrations happen by chance or are they being managed?
  • Does immigration lead to a general decrease in trust within society?
  • How many international migrants are there today and how many of those are potentially ready to immigrate to Europe?
  • Why are many Europeans reluctant to accept large numbers of migrants from other continents?
  • What should the EU’s (new) migration, integration and demographic policy look like?
