Crimes that occur in the domestic environment are also known as “domestic violence”, “couple violence” or “relationship violence” require special attention. These acts shake the victims' trust and attack the supposedly safe area of their own home.

One way to deal with these crimes at the criminal level is to carry out a victim-offender-mediation. This work examines victim-offender-mediation procedures that have actually been carried out and examines what conditions must be met in order to enable victim-offender-mediation in the crime field of domestic violence, what criteria the public prosecutor's office uses for ist decision, how the processes are and which success criteria are given importance in practice.

First, the victim-offender-mediation and the phenomenon of domestic violence are theoretically embedded in the criminological context of restorative justice. Subsequently, as part of qualitative research, all compensation proceedings in accordance with Section 153a Paragraph 1 No. 5 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which were carried out at the Hamburg public prosecutor's office in 2022, will be evaluated.

The evaluation method, developed specifically for this work, represents a unique selling point. The work can close a research gap by collecting and evaluating the relevant data.

The aim of the work is to link the phenomenon of domestic violence with victim-offender mediation and the criminological concept of restorative justice and to find out whether victim-offender mediation is an effective means of countering crimes in the area of domestic violence.
