About this book deutschenglish
In this book, the work of twelve renowned socialist theologians from Europe is analyzed in order to draw up a balance of their arguments critical of Marxism. The analyzed texts date from a period of nine decades.
Since the October Revolution of 1917 at the latest, socialist theologians have been increasingly challenged to take a stand on orthodox Marxism and communism. Socialism is not the same as communism. Therefore, differentiated position determinations are to be expected in studies of this kind. Among the theologians selected here with socialist attitudes, at least a certain goodwill or even a certain affection for Marxist and communist views could be assumed.
The authors come from different areas of Europe. Some of these theologians lived in the Eastern Bloc for a time. Some lived there as citizens. Some had to eke out a prison existence there for a time. There is a considerable relationship between them. The study reveals a broad spectrum of opinions. The overall imbalance is due to experiences from the respective life stories, specific national histories and events in world history. Experiences in dealing with memberships in political parties and religious groups are also taken into account.
Woven into the study are also counter-arguments from the orthodox Marxist side. The focus here is on ideologically critical remarks on the sources of these socialist theologians. In this way, according to an old legal principle, the other party is also represented. At the same time, this enables readers to form differentiated judgements.
All in all, this is a collection of arguments that arose from a virtual dialogue between socialist theologians and orthodox Marxists. Certainly, the Marxist tradition has lost much of its importance after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc countries. For this reason, the question is also discussed as to which negative points of criticism can be seen as factors for the later defeat of the socialist state system even before 1989.
Despite everything, these theologians pointed out overlaps between the Christian and Marxist traditions. For this reason, the question of what relevance Marxism and arguments critical of Marxism will nevertheless have in the future will also be examined.
