More than 99% of German companies are classified as SMEs. They employ more than half of all employees in the country and generate around one third of the sales of all companies. However, when crises occur, economic policy usually focuses first on corporations and large companies, while small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are quickly pushed into the background or even forgotten.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the energy crisis related to the Russia-Ukraine war are global crises with dimensions and impacts that cannot yet be assessed.

However, crises of different proportions occur permanently all over the world and can be avoided in very few cases.

Efficient and effective crisis management is therefore no longer just an option but has become a business imperative. Companies cannot control crises, but they can influence how they prepare for and respond to crisis situations.

Regardless of the nature of a crisis, it is evident that preparation is the key to successful crisis management and can significantly influence the impact of all crises.

Effective crisis management cannot work without good communication and well-trained leaders. Therefore, communication, an appropriately adapted management style and the competence of managers are in many cases the core of successful crisis management.

The ability to communicate properly during and after a crisis can control the overall outcome of the situation and the impact on one's own company. Understandable, comprehensible communication creates clarity and orientation for the company's own employees, customers and other stakeholders.
