In the context of current immigration, attention is again drawn on the educational policy level to the particular difficulties of integrating migrant children and youth into the German educational system as well as to the disparities in educational participation between migrant and non-migrant children and youth. At the same time, this leads to a high interest of current research in determining and modeling the professionalism as well as the competence of teachers. Especially students with a migration background become the focus of the professional research of teachers.

The present study is particularly interested in the level of education and in-service training of teachers, their assessment of their own competencies, and their reflection on their education in German as a second language.

It attempts to open the way for further research in the area of teacher professionalism in German as a second language insofar as it draws attention to the need for professional DaZ teaching as well as more intensive in-service training for teachers. Also, her focus on the International Preparatory Classes, which reflect our multicultural multilingual society and point to the urgency of tailor-made measures, could act as an impetus for further empirical research in this area.
