About this book deutschenglish
Christian and Islamic mysticism have a surprising number of similarities and parallels, apart from their differences in object. The similarities also include the formation of different mystical paths.
On the basis of a foundation of mysticism in Christianity and Islam, three specific mystical paths are identified: The "regulated" path in the Christian order or a Sufi brotherhood, a more affective-voluntary path and a more intellectual-systematic approach.
The Islamic mystics Mansūr al-Ḥallāj (d. 922), Jalāl ad-Dīn al-Rūmī (d. 1273) and the Christian mystic John of the Cross (d. 1591) are representatives of affective-voluntary mysticism. For intellectual-systematic mysticism, Muḥammad al-Ghazzālī (d. 1111) and Thomas Aquinas (d. 1274) are compared with each other.
All approaches to mysticism - whether Christian or Islamic - have in common a pronounced longing for God, from which mystics develop an ever stronger love of God.
From the comparison of the mystical paths in Christianity and Islam, valuable attitudes for interreligious dialogue can be derived and gained. These enrich the dialogue by adding a spiritual dimension and deepening it. The attitude of longing, for example, can contribute to a better understanding of the process character that is constitutive for interreligious dialogue and encourage us to continue the dialogue between the religions trustfully.
Annemarie Schimmel (1922-2003), whose work is received in this thesis, was a professor of Indo-Muslim Culture at Harvard University for many years. She is considered as an expert on the mystical dimension of Islam and has impressively demonstrated the dialogue with the Islamic world through her life and work as well as her commitment as a bridge builder between the Orient and the Occident.
