About this book deutschenglish

“The syllable in bilingual language acquisition” by Agnieszka Ciężka

Nowadays, plurilingualism is no longer an exceptional case. Regional and transregional travel, living in border regions, working abroad, and exchange programs at schools and universities - all global mobility leads to language contacts of various kinds, which shape the everyday life of many people and form a new multilingual society. Considering the immense significance of writing skills in today’s private and professional world, language acquisition in a bilingual context demonstrates a highly current and socially relevant issue. In this context, the syllable, as one of the writing regularities in German, is of central relevance. Thus far, there are only a few comparative studies on the syllable. Even less research has been done on bilingual language acquisition from the perspective of prosodic structure.

This publication addresses central subareas of general and individual language linguistics and discusses current questions in the areas of language acquisition and syllable phonology. It discusses new approaches in graphemics and phonology and advances theory development by means of contrastive comparison of syllable structures in German and Polish. A quantitative-qualitative study will be used to discuss how prosodic differences between languages affect children's spelling performance in coordinated classes. It turns out that the spelling competence in syllables developed in bilingual acquisition is characterized by a similar qualitative development as in monolingual acquisition and by the rarity of interference errors. This illustrates that bilingual acquisition of written language neither overtaxes children cognitively nor is it detrimental to the acquisition of the German writing system. Accordingly, any concerns about the coordinated courses can be eliminated.
