About this book deutschenglish

The works tackles the question why and how word meanings divergences in german speaking TV debates are thematised and negociated, with following hypothesis are starting points:

  • Dissents related to words meanings and designation of facts result from the different social positions of speakers in the studio.
  • Negotiations of meaning and designation are carried out so as to confirm and reinforce one’s social positions and they don’t necessarily result in mutual consent as concerns the words in question.

The survey is based on the theory of semantic reconstitution and the positioning theory. The theory of semantic reconstitution (Deppermann 2002) stipulates that words ’meanings are negotiated and produced according the conversation context. The positioning theory (Moghaddam/Harre 1998) states that conversation partners attribute to themselves and to theirs counterparts some roles, rights and duty, which constitutes the contextual positions guiding their utterances. The methological framework resorted to is the ethnomethodological conversational analysis as it states that any conversation trouble is contextually and interactively spotted, addressed and solved by the conversation partners.

The analysis of 23 transcribed TV sequences enabled to confirm all the starting hypothesis and to further realize that negotiations are done with the aims, among others, of justifying some facts, justifying some decisions, or clarifying some facts. It also appears that words’ meaning and facts’ designation are always addressed in relation with some social and political events, and there is a minimal semantic load conversely and tacitly admitted by participants during negotiations. A consensual solution to conversational problems cannot thus be guaranteed at first sight. It also further suggests that any word should be considered as likely to be addressed in conversation, as far as its meaning is concerned, and to always take into account the positional factors in semantics.
