Contemporary Anglophone postcolonial and transcultural literary texts employ the dynamic relationships between the verbal and the visual for the expression of socio-formative practices such as identity formation, resistance to and reversal of dominant western discourses. The selected novels and poems are expressions of those practices as they contribute to the creation of new versions of collective and individual identities, providing resistance to muteness and one-sided representations fostered by former colonial perspectives. Thus, they establish a new vision and localisation of dominant western artistic expressions and appropriations of countries formerly colonized by the British. A broad variety of different close-readings of selected case studies by Michael Ondaatje (Sri Lanka/Canada), Sia Figiel (Samoa), Andrea Levy (Caribbean/UK), Teju Cole (Nigeria/U.S.), Sindiwe Magona (South Africa), Seamus Heaney (Northern Ireland), Rupi Kaur (India/Canada), Carol Shields (Canada), Ben Okri (Nigeria), Keri Hulme (New Zealand) and Nadeem Aslam (India/UK) highlight the authors' preoccupation with the visual and their employment of images within the verbal narrative in the form of ekphrasis, technopaignia or integrated photographs. Some texts respond directly to pieces of actual visual art, some are drawn to the imaginary, others include photographs or explore different forms of seeing and perspective. Therefore, these works offer an effectual basis to investigate visual aesthetics as socio-formative practices.
