About this book deutschenglish

Digital transformation is spreading rapidly, also in all types of projects. At the same time, despite all efforts, project management remains less successful. The question arises of whether digital transformation affects project management success. And, if so, can this impact be observed and measured?

The present work explores the nature of the relationship between digital transformation on the one hand and project management and, as a consequence, project success on the other.

The study consists of two parts. The first, exploratory part includes a structured literature review and a qualitative preliminary study. The first-of-its-kind concept of “Elements of digital transformation” (EDT) is introduced and a bucket of such elements is identified and classified.

The second, explanatory part of the study tests seven hypotheses about the influence of EDTs on project success and the role of several moderators. Different types of statistical analysis and testing procedures were performed with data from the self-conducted online survey with 586 respondents from 71 countries.

The results show that some EDTs influence project success, but not as strongly as expected. This impact can be both directly, through use in project management, and indirectly, through use in the project environment. The existence of a moderating effect of project and organizational characteristics – geographic region, industry branch, project type, organizational size and digital maturity level, and observer role – is demonstrated for various combinations of EDTs and project success criteria.

This research contributes to the body of academic knowledge by providing a link between the realms of digital transformation and project success, introducing some new concepts, and enriching discussions about project success and project categorization.

A clear classification and assessment of EDTs in the context of project man-agement provide a systematic basis for greater understanding and guidance for project management and executives in a rapidly changing environment. Investment decisions about the use of specific EDTs in projects and organizations can be made more effectively on this basis. Executives will find food for thought for the development of their digital strategy.
