With terms like "time zones" or "zonal time" we usually associate greater geographical distances within huge territories like continents or countries. However, not only geographical territories but also cultural "areas" can be determined by "time zones" which have an significal impact within periods. Cultural developments do not always follow the chronology of the "calendar". Moreover, the co-existence of "old" and "new" can be typical for many moments and periods of cultural and literary history.

The essays of this book deal with these phenomena in different historical periods. Novels by Eduard von Keyserling and Otto Julius Bierbaum are analyzed as typical examples of dominating trends in "find-du-siecle literature". In contrast to short-time-trends within certain periods or decades there are also long-time-continuities in the construction of locations which are associated with phenomena like longing and yearning.

The final chapter concentrates on the institution of literary criticism and shows the enormous impact of the growing interconnection modern media for the development of this institution.
