Long before the foundation of the West-German Army the West-German federal border guards (aka BGS or Bundesgrenzschutz) were a refuge for the old soldiers of World War 2. This so called "Special Police Force of the Republic" tried to convince the general public of its peaceful and un-military disposition while preparing to fight the Soviet Forces in East-Germany.

German chancellor Konrad Adenauer called them "porters of the best of German traditions" and "outpost in the fight for freedom".

However, the Bundesgrenzschutz isn't considered part of German military history. Although his part in re-arming West-Germany was far greater than acknowledged by historical researchers.

Police officer and historian Lars Kohler closes this remarkable gap in German military history. He sheds light on the double-faced nature of this organisation. An organisation that always claimed to be police while training for war.

Their methods and mindset were very close to the tactics employed in the 21st century under the label of counterinsurgency. And the threat they prepared for resurfaces almost exactly today as seen in the seizure of Crimea and the events in Donbas.

This carefully researched study on the foundation of the German Federal Border Guard originated as a doctoral study at the FernUniversität Hagen in Germany. It offers new results on the inner structure of the BGS and sheds light on the organisation's hybrid character.
