My research work deals with the cognitive-semantic analysis of somatic phraseological expressions of German and Hindi. It is based upon the fundamental principle of cognitive phraseology that the meaning of phraseological expressions is motivated by certain cognitive phenomenon, including metaphors, metonymy, cultural symbols etc. In relation to that, one of the main objectives of this contrastive study is to discover to what extent the methods of analysis developed within the framework of cognitive theory of metaphor (Lakoff/Johnson 1980 & 1999) can be used for the cognitive-semantic analysis of German and Hindi somatic idioms. Furthermore, the aim of this study is to compare the conceptual metaphors in German and Hindi phraseologisms and analyse their underlying cultural-semantic differences. For this purpose, this empirical study collected and scrutinised such phraseologisms that (a) contain the lexemes eye and heart, and (b) express or describe the emotions anger, happiness, and fear. The study orients around the fundamentals of both language system and language use. This research work is expected to prepare the theoretical framework for German-Hindi contrastive phraseology and to provide a better understanding of the metaphorical structuring of both the phraseologies.
