Gamification is a current trend of the digitalization which is found in many aspects of the everyday life of our society. This concept aims at an increase of motivations in different aspects of life and is based on the human basic need to play. Successful use of gamification in education, the health sector, social media, or marketing leads to the assumption that gamification could have a positive impact in management accounting and experimental research.

To evaluate the transfer of the idea of gamification into reporting tasks in the field of management accounting and into experimental online-surveys, this work extensively describes such playful designs with its modes of action and its factors of influence. Besides the contemplations of the existing definitions in literature, different forms of motivation and different forms of a playful design through game elements are presented as well. One of the main findings of this work show that the definition of the targeted groups is very important for a successful development and implementation of gamification. For this reason, it is necessary to take a closer look at the so called playertypes and their connections to human character traits and game preferences.

The gained knowledge about the modes of action and the optimized use of gamification opens the possibility to use it on the current problems of the reporting process and of experimental online-surveys. The explanations show, besides other conclusions, that the playful design helps the users to enhance their processing of information and to increase their motivations in those tasks.

The last part of this work presents an explorative study. This experimental study investigates gamification in online-surveys with the topic of visual layouts of reports. It examines the effect of a different use of game elements on motivation and performance, as well as empirical connections between playertypes, human character traits and game elements.
