The author devotes herself to village churches of the early and high Middle Ages in the northern part of the diocese of Naumburg as they existed around 1500. This is a subject that is not directly the focus of art history and has been little researched for this area. In her study, the author examined for the first time previously little described and unknown churches with existing Romanesque and Gothic building fabric from the Lobeda, Schkölen and Zorbau deaneries in the Naumburg diocese. In this way, it was possible to take stock of the architecture and furnishings of the village sacred buildings over a period from the 11th to the 15th century. In the process, isolated developments and influences of the architecture of monasteries and towns or other sacred village landscapes could be identified. The main part of the work consists of a detailed catalogue of 72 selected churches in this area. This describes and evaluates all ascertainable information on the historical, archaeological and architectural aspects of the preserved structure. In addition to these studies, an attempt was made to establish supra-regional connections and comparisons with sacred village, town and monastery landscapes in other German regions. The result of this work, apart from the detailed inventory, analysis and comparison of unknown material, is the realization that typical Romanesque and Gothic building forms are present, but that each church has its own specific character.
