The increasingly price-sensitive and highly competitive construction supply industry is under increasing pressure. The manufacture of semi-finished products is characterised by commoditisation and standardisation, leaving manufacturing companies looking for differentiation options around digital solutions. Existing approaches from product development are only of limited use and cause a multitude of problems regarding quality, costs, and time in the development of digital solutions. Supplier companies are willing to develop more smart services, but are struggling to do so. Existing approaches to product modularisation have hardly been applied to the development of smart services in manufacturing industries.
Using the example of the construction supply industry, this work shows how service modularisation in combination with a support system simplifies the development of innovative smart services in supplier companies. For this purpose, existing problems in service development are analysed and a solution approach is shown. 297 companies from eight countries are examined within the framework of a market analysis of the construction supply industry. Subsequently, a new modularisation approach is developed and applied to 497 smart services. In the end, 68 standardised modules are formed as the core of a module-based system. With the module-based system, companies are enabled to develop digitised individual services and a service portfolio in a targeted manner.
Finally, the module-based system is implemented in the form of a decision support system and used in real use cases. The support system enables the exchange of expertise between interdisciplinary user groups. The system provides users with well-founded recommendations for the implementation of smart services for supplying companies in the construction industry.
