What makes leadership and management more and more complex? Why do managers and executives still fail in practice today?
One possible answer: The conditions under which leadership and management take place are becoming more complex, more stressful and more opaque. A second answer: Despite the enormous specialization and professionalization of leadership and management training courses, these appear to be inadequate when it comes to leading people in a meaningful way. Ultimately, we don’t know why leadership fails. Nor do we know which parts of our psyche call for resistance to leadership. Our psyche has areas that we do not know and do not want to get to know. This is how both managers and employees act: inside always under the influence of internal, unconscious resistance, repression and various defense mechanisms.
The present study analyzes the psychodynamically sound training of executives in German-speaking countries. Both leadership and management-relevant courses as well as non-academic further education are analyzed with regard to their teaching of psychodynamic competencies. The basis of the analysis is a system of categories that represent the essential psychodynamic leadership skills in a scientifically justified manner. In addition to the pure analysis of leadership skills, the importance of personal development in the context of leadership and management training is analyzed.
The present work is aimed primarily at researchers, teachers and students who are concerned with the question of how the training of leadership and management staff can succeed and what influence the theoretical, psychodynamic foundations have on leadership success.
