About this book deutschenglish

Many authors have already dealt with the influence of the European level on Many authors have already dealt with the influence of the European level on national or regional areas within the EU. Few, however, have dealt with the Europeanisation of areas outside the EU. Literature focusing on the European influence on the identity of a community outside the EU territory or the influence on its separatism is not yet to be found. This book attempts to fill this scholarly gap. It even goes a little further and examines European influence on separatism (Europeanised separatism) on micro-nations. Such are communities with less than 100,000 inhabitants. Recognised micro-nations on the Iberian Peninsula are the Val d’Aran and Gibraltar. These also serve as case studies in this research. This book attempts to answer the following questions:

  • How does the EU influence such a micro-nation in its plans to separate or declare a state of its own?
  • Why should a small nation apply for EU membership and transfer its newly acquired sovereignty to a supranational actor?
  • Does the European integration process possibly support or hinder these nations in the final step of full independence?

To answer these questions, data was collected through expert interviews and online-based referendum surveys. The latter were supported by social media in 2019 and 2020. Exciting results on national and European identity, Europeanisation and separatism can be found in this study. The similarities between the Aranese and Gibraltarian identities are surprising and complex. There are also similarities in the image of their respective kingdoms. Europe and the EU are perceived as both positive and negative in some aspects. The decisive factor seems to be the great fear of loss of sovereignty, loss of culture and fear of losing one’s own identity.
