about this bookdeutsch english
The Arab poet Mahmud Darwish opted for lyrical meditation in order to dress his exile experience and existential concerns as well as collective reminiscences in poetic words. His poems have been translated into various languages, including German. The poet is regarded in the Arab world as a radiant symbol of modern poetry, known for his tireless search for a compass for stable identity, justice and freedom on the literary terrain.
Indeed, his poetry occupies a prominent place in literary translation into German. Thus, the well-known topos of translation theory, according to which a complex and often self-reflexive work of art such as a poem is actually untranslatable, needs to be questioned. The translators of Darwish’s poetry may want to contribute with their performance to getting to know how Darwish’s poetry works.
The quality and impact of this tool “translation from Arabic to German” are analyzed comparatively in the study. For that purpose, the author tries to identify what exactly is “special” in Darwish’s poetry and to verifiy its modern features. The aim of this verification is to examine the translation practice used by the translators of Darwish’s poetry and to explore their strategies with analytical instruments based on translation theory. Which criteria were used by the lyric translators in their translation of meaning and expression in Mahmud Darwish’s poems? This includes the question of their intention in the translation process. What role do the aspects literality and imagery, onomatopoeia and melody and meaning of rhyme play for the translators in the transmission of Darwish’s poems?
