This book gives the necessary theoretical knowledge und provides a guide to action for counseling, if another person is not able to cope with a difficult everyday situation without help. Counseling should enable or stimulate the cognitive processes that this person has to carry out in order to asses this situation and to find a successful way of action.

Talking is the central method in counseling. Talking should help to build a relationship and to change the situation of the person being counseled. The basic elements of talking are presented. It is shown how plans for talking can be designed using these elements that lead, for example, to clarifying a situation, resolving a conflict or solving a problem. If the help seeking person needs additional information that relates to a content area, then this content must be taken from related object theories and inserted into the consulting process.

The counseling theory developed in this book avoids the mistake to be bound to any theory of therapy in advance. Instead the principles for proper and effective actions in counseling are derived from cognitive psychology and theory of action. This makes possible to formulate a uniform theory for different advisory tasks.

In this book process theory and theories of content for advice are strictly separated. This separation is necessary to avoid manipulation. This would take place when a special theoretical view on aspects of everyday life would work as implicit assumptions for the whole process of counseling.

In addition to this special feature the reader will find in this book a wealth of helpful considerations for counseling, as for example a theoretical basis for understanding a person, ways of adapting counseling to different cognitive skills of the help seeking persons, role of diagnosis, approaches to quality management.
