About this book deutschenglish

Until the 1970s, the focus of Operations Management was on the efficient production of physical goods. Due to the dynamic environment in which companies operate, this subfield of Business Administration has continuously expanded and covers today a wide range of tasks. Over the past decades, the strategic contribution that Operations Management can provide within a company has increasingly come into the focus. Its concepts were transferred to services and complemented, for example, by Supply Chain Management in response to changing conditions. These developments show that, due to their dynamic environment, companies are constantly faced with new problems in the area of Operations Management that need to be solved. In the context of the dissertation, three current problems of Operations Management are considered, and solution approaches are developed.

The author considers a problem of Operations Management related to the service of car rental companies. As part of a delivery and pickup service, the rental cars are delivered to the customers and picked up there again after the period of use. This service poses major challenges for car rental companies. In addition to the routes of the vehicles, the allocation of the drivers who carry out the transport of the rental cars must be planned. An algorithmic solution approach for the efficient design of this service has been developed.

With the introduction of an alternative system of household waste collection, a problem of Operations Management is considered in connection with a service that is usually carried out by municipal waste disposal companies and thus is assigned to the public sector. Different algorithmic approaches for the efficient design of the introduction of an underfloor system to replace a door-to-door collection system in which citizens’ waste is collected in dustbins are developed and compared.

A strategic problem of Operations Management is considered with the question of the optimal supply chain strategy in the apparel industry. To investigate this, the traditional and the fast fashion strategy are compared using an agent-based simulation approach. In the case of the traditional strategy, the focus is on the lowest possible production costs, whereas the fast fashion strategy focuses on short lead times to be able to react as quickly as possible to customer needs.
