While numerous studies have dealt with questions of social structure in general, detailed cross-country comparisons are rare. This book offers an in-depth comparison of Germany, Austria and Switzerland regarding different dimensions of their social structure, their commonalities and differences. The main criterion for comparison is social inequality, e.g. the unequal distribution of income or oppotunities for different social groups and social strata. Beginning with the history of modern social structure in the 19th century, the book covers topics such as population structure, the capacity and efficiency of education systems, transformation of labor markets, frms of occupation and life styles as well as the (un)equal distribution of income in each country.
