High expectations rest on the international cooperation in science and research. From a Western perspective, China is both an attractive partner and a rival which is looked at with suspicion. Therefore, the „right“ balance between rapprochement and delimination is a frequent subject of political and societal debates.

However, little empirical research has been undertaken to investigate this issue. This book analyses the practics of Sino-German scientific collaboration from the perspective of the scientists involved. It shows how scientists collaborate in an intercultural context and how (scientific) knowledge is being constituted in modern societies.

By means of grounded theory-based research, the author points out that scientific research is not a question of organisation and coordination but of trust. The phenomenon of trust explains how German and Chinese scientists experience and shape their respective collaboration, and what significance and purpose they ascribe to their joint work on and with scientific knowledge. Furthermore, trust enables the respective scientists to (productively) cope with the uncertainties that are part of scientific cooperation in general, and of the German-Chinese cooperation in particular.

Against this background, it becomes apparent that the enormous importance of trust is being underestimated by the political and institutional actors that shape Sino-German science collaboration. The present aim of connecting as many actors as possible does obviously not fit the scientists‘ requirements for cooperation.
