The alterability and ever astonishing diversity of New Music is a complex challenge for integrative theory studies and ear training. This work shall serve as a textbook and a reader. It documents the studying process during a semester. Representative cases are chosen regarding their historical, aesthetic, didactic and interdisciplinary features to encourage further research into New Music. Furthermore, domains such as notation are highlighted in all different facets. For this reason, the book contains i.a. complete aural scores of Stockhausen´s Song of the Youths (Gesang der Jünglinge), Varèse´s poème électronique or Déserts. Hereby, it is of particular concern that New Music cannot only be read about, but also listened to, improvised and notated.

Martin Hecker, born in 1980, studied Music Theory, Composition and Piano at the HfM Dresden and the Mozarteum Salzburg. In 2008 he received a PhD of Musicology at HMT Leipzig. Currently, he teaches at the universities Folkwang Universität Essen, the HMT Leipzig, the HMTM Hannover as well as the HFK Bremen. In 2010, his chamber operas “Dinner for One” and „Der Narr im Waisenhaus“ were performed in cooperation with the Semperoper Dresden. As a chamber music partner he worked in New York, London, Paris, Berlin and Salzburg.
