Every human being carries a deep yearning that tries to transcend daily life. The constant search for techniques of meditation and contemplation makes a fundamental reflection on the nature of mysticism imperative: What is meant by the term „mysticism“? What kind of experiences are associated with this term? The present publication gives an overview of what is meant by „mysticism“ and „mystical experience.“ The author asks - on the basis of a philosophical anthropology - for the inner unity and the very essence of mysticism and thus seeks to find answers that above all can provide orientation for modern man.

The present publication marks the path of mysticism on the one hand as a life movement and on the other hand as a cognitive movement. Starting from a purely formal definition of the term, an attempt is made to systematically grasp and analyze these currents of mysticism. The result is a ’systematics of mysticism’ that allows us to make profound statements about the very nature of mysticism and thus to answer questions whose answers have so far resulted in a tautological dead end.
