This research provides managers of high technology developments with recommendations on how to improve project execution in the context of cross-functional collaboration of holistic project teams. In particular projects using agile methods in the light of hybrid project management. The findings of this research provide validated success factors and demonstrate how to significant improve cross-functional collaboration and finally improve project execution. The findings also demonstrate how to improve or weaken significantly with the evaluated success factors of a.) Office Environment (e. g. Open Space), b.) Level of Project Team Autonomy, and c). Art of Communication projects performance indicators such as quality, time, risk and budget. This study also provides new insights regarding Open Space and what alternative office concepts can boost project teams instead. The background of this research is the shift of the pharmaceutical industry from chemical drug supplier to health services provider. Therefore, the pharmaceutical industry faces the challenge to develop digitalized combination products. For such development resources are limited, and development timeframe is shortened. Due to its technological complexity, such development projects are mostly executed with hybrid project management. Based on literature one of the most important aspects of enhancing project execution is to improve cross-functional collaboration. However, for project management, it is not clear how this determinant influence cross-functional collaboration on an operational level and finally the impact on project performance. As there might be a bias on performing research only from a senior management perspective this research attempts to investigate what are the most important success factors from various hierarchal perspectives. Based on operational perspective the field research focuses its evaluation on the success factors mentioned above. In summary, the research provides a combined view of different topics regarding technology and innovation management, provides new insights for the scientific community as well as validated recommendations for the managerial perspective.
