About this book deutschenglish

The oncological diagnosis often triggers a traumatic crisis. Hope plays a major role in successful disease processing. It is considered one of the main factors that can cause the phenomenon of posttraumatic growth (PTG).

As part of a qualitative study, 15 experienced individuals of the medical and nursing professions were asked about the significance of hope. All interviewees are active in oncology and/or palliative care. It is evident that personal attention and the time dedicated by the therapist are factors that help a patient with being hopeful. But hope itself lies with the patient. Hope changes over time. Remembering good times in the patient’s life can also be helpful. Furthermore, fostering false hope can also harm patients because it disturbs or completely prevents the inner process of maturing that many people experience in the context of a disease leading to death.

The act of hope takes on different forms and dimensions: hope can manifest itself as a kind of rebellion in the face of difficult circumstances; hope can be disappointed and need time for a transformation; hope can sometimes disappear completely and be lost but can ultimately give way to an inner contentment. Thus, even in the last phase of life, the ability of humans to a „satisfaction paradox“ is evident.

In the accompaniment to the end of life and in the observation of the personality maturing and the development of an inner contentment in the face of dying and the near death is a factor of hope for the practitioners themselves. They may go along and experience as spectators that „it can go well“ or that it is „okay“, as was formulated in a conversation. Here, a space is opened up for the treating professional that gives hope. As with relationships in general, there is also reciprocity between the patient and the practitioner, which ideally benefits both sides.
