In recent years, particle matter emissions in Germany have increased due to the growing demand for a CO2-neutral heat supply from solid biofuels. Against this background in this study the possibilities to reduce inorganic particulate matter emitted into the gas phase during the oxidization of wood and wood / straw mixtures by the use of additives is investigated. Besides the analysis of the biofuel ashes, the release of the inorganic elements from different non-additivated and additivated biomass samples into the gas phase is studied based on a novel method in the lab scale. The results show that the inorganic particulate matter emissions and the released amount of potassium can significantly be reduced by the additives kaolinite and iron(III) sulfate.
