The coach-athlete-communication is often driven by emotions. Therefore, this study examines the functions and consequences of emotions in terms of a successful coach-athlete-communication. Considering the social systems theory emotions are included into a model of the coach-athlete-communication by reflecting the meaning of emotions for the selections of the communication and by highlighting the functions and consequences of emotions for the requirements of understanding, influencing and conflict managing. The study uses these theoretical reflexions to qualitatively reanalyze given video- and interview data of research projects on the social competence of coaches in elite sports. The main result of the analysis is the indication of the complexity and difficulty of successful emotional communication. Emotions affect the communication in a way that requires the highest ability of observation and reflection faculty. The focus on the complex interplay between psychic and social systems brings this insight to light and enables the thesis to give particular advice on how to successfully communicate given the influence of emotions.
