About this book deutschenglish

Trade associations act as powerful and influential players in German economic policy. But how do they see themselves? For example, how do they deal with conflicts of interest? Which tasks and characteristics do they attribute themselves? This book provides information about these and other aspects in the self-perception of associations. This is made possible by extensive data on membership management, communication and the character of employers‘ associations, trade associations, chambers of industry and commerce as well as chambers of crafts. Based on surveys, this data is compiled and evaluated. In addition, the optimised recording of various facets of the self-image in the context of identity economics is of special importance for the data collection.

But the book goes one more step further. A time digression into the 1960s to a much-cited association study of the well-known economist Günter Schmölders makes it possible to consider changes in self-perception with a gap of 50 years. In this way, a large number of individual deviations in the assessment and positioning become visible in detail. However, there are also general similarities and differences in the development dynamics of the associations.

In addition to the numerous empirical data, a comprehensive stock of archival material on the historical events of the 1960s association study is compiled and evaluated. Against the background of this analysis, the book therefore raises the question to what extent modern identity economists unconsciously stand in the tradition of Günter Schmölders and his interdisciplinary understanding of economics. At the same time, it suggests identity economics as a possible alternative to the analysis of associations with regard to various association theories.
