The Yiddish language owing to a complex history of the Jewish people is a highly interesting object of research. In the course of historical changes Yiddish came under influence of many cultures and languages connected with them, among others under the influence of Polish. What were the effects of this language confrontation?
The author of the book answers the above-formulated question in an understandable way and on the basis of various examples. Her linguistic analysis of the mutual Yiddish-Polish influences encompasses individual words as well as selected proverbs and emphasizes the richness of language components of Yiddish origin in the Polish language and the presence of Polish vocabulary in Yiddish.
This book belonging to the scope of contrastive linguistics, written in a clearly arranged and comprehensible way, is directed primarily at those interested in Slavic studies and those concerned with the Yiddish language. It might, however, also be of interest to other linguists. Native Polish and Yiddish speakers may be surprised at the very close relationship between the two languages.
