In the context of competitive sports, mental strength is becoming more and more important. Thoughts can make a decisive contribution to the development and retrieval of individual performance at the desired time. Closely disputed duels are often decided at the end in favor of the mentally stronger athlete or the mentally stronger team. Also in daily sports practice, (competitive) athletes have to deal repeatedly with the aspects of performance development, performance improvement and peak performance at the right time. Perceived discrepancies between the current performance level and the desired goal can trigger negative thoughts, which have an influence on athletes’ further actions and behavior.
To date, there is no clear empirical evidence to support a direct relationship between such thoughts and limited athletic performance. The present research therefore deals with the question of whether negative thoughts have a direct influence on athletic performance and how important this actually is in daily sports practice.
The author of the book focuses on persistent, repetitive thoughts (also: rumination) and examines their relation to athletic performance. A total of five different quantitative and qualitative studies with competitive athletes from different team and individual sports are presented.
Surprisingly, the results of this research show a discrepancy between the subjective perception of the target group and the empirical data and thus provide valuable starting points for further research in sport psychology.
