A multitude of studies indicate the teachers’s ample importance for the learning success of students. Hence it’s first and foremost up to the instructor whether school complies its key duty to offer good teaching. Because that’s how the proficiency level of children and youths can be improved.

Since neither academic studies nor traineeship suffice in order to live up to all the diverse and complex challenges of the teaching profession, it’s the third phase of teacher education, namely professional development, which moves into the center of attentions. Thus lifelong learning with the goal of an enhancement of professional skills doesn’t stop at the teaching profession. However, findings of research on professional development suggest that many traditional further education formats are inefficient. That’s the reason why innovative concepts are increasingly applied.

In this study a professional development program, that emphasizes the connection between theory and practice, is tested for efficacy. By means of quantitative research methods, the author pursues the question to what extent the pedagogical content knowledge of the program participants develops. Moreover the progress of the spelling skills of those children whose teachers take part in the program is in the foreground.

The theoretical part of this dissertation initially deals with some basic ideas that play a major role in the area of teacher professional development. Subsequently three essential approaches to pedagogical professional research are explicated and discussed. This is followed up by the current state of research concerning the effectiveness of professional development in the teaching profession, classified in four impact levels. Further academic chapters engage in written language acquisition, which is the subject matter of the further education program, on the one hand. On the other hand the used further training design is introduced with regard to its structure, didactics, methodology and content.

It’s this study’s indisputable asset that actual effects of the professional development program are not only explored on the teachers’ rank, but also on the rarely measured students’ rank.
