About this book deutschenglish

The enormous increase in the number of people with dementia must be seen as a comprehensive problem in connection with the increasing ageing of society. The number of people with dementia in Germany is currently estimated at around 1.6 million. An increase to up to three million people with dementia is expected by 2050. With the progression of dementia, moving into an inpatient care facility often becomes unavoidable. The best possible care for this group of people within the framework of palliative care and thus also a high-quality training of nursing staff is therefore an important care objective.

In contrast, many professional caregivers complain of a qualification deficit in palliative care. The Curriculum Palliative Practices of the Robert Bosch Foundation addresses this qualification deficit in palliative care and aims in particular at the recruitment and retention of nursing staff.

This current study examines the effectiveness of the Curriculum Palliative Practices to evaluate whether and what changes can be observed in long-term inpatient nursing staff after training with this curriculum with regard to the approach, care and nursing of dying dementia patients. The intervention study is carried out in inpatient care facilities in various German states. To verify the achievement of the main objectives of the curriculum, the study is based on a written survey with study and control groups. The quantitative evaluations are almost exclusively descriptive and are supplemented by qualitative results.

As a result, participation in the training course has various positive effects and can also be recommended for use in nursing training. Through this integration, the trainees experience a strengthening of their professional self-confidence and their confidence to act, especially when it comes to deciding whether to "pursue” or "leave out" certain nursing measures in palliative care.
